How much does water underfloor heating cost?

UNIZONE water underfloor heating systems are designed for single zone areas of any size.

UNIZONE systems start from £1695 + VAT. Installation is included.

MULTIZONE water underfloor heating systems are designed for areas that are split into one or more heated zones.

MULTIZONE systems start from £1995 + VAT. Installation is included.

"An estimate would be that it costs £100 per square metre for the first 20 square metres and around £30-£40 for every additional square metre. A Unizone system is slightly cheaper than a Multizone system as you require less air temperature control components."

How much does a UNIZONE underfloor heating system cost?

Our entry level UNIZONE systems offer excellent value for money starting at £1695 + VAT.

These systems include much more than you will find in entry level systems elsewhere. For the smallest areas, we supply a single port manifold, a pump, a mixing valve, a zone valve, a programmable thermostat, all the plumbing and wiring components you will need and enough pipe to heat a maximum of 20 square metres (10 square metres if it's a conservatory.).

We can supply any size UNIZONE system you specify. We will supply and install the right system to suit your particular project.

All UNIZONE systems include a stainless steel underfloor heating manifold which splits the underfloor heating pipe into loops no more than 100 metres long.

You need the same amount of control and distribution components to heat 200 square metres as you do 20 square metres. Only extra pipe and clips and a larger manifold are needed when heating a space over 20 m2. This means the first 20 square metres always costs more per square metre than every additional square metre.

The price per square metre of a UNIZONE system decreases as the heated area increases.

An estimate would be that it costs £85 per square metre for the first 20 square metres and only £30 - £40 per square metre for every additional square metre (up to approximately 200 square metres.)*

*The cut off point is just over 200 square metres because the largest manifold can serve that area. Any space larger than that would require more than one system.

Chances are an "off the shelf" underfloor heating kit isn't going to fit your project exactly so please contact us for advice and a free quote.

We will design you the perfect, bespoke underfloor heating system.

How much does a MULTIZONE underfloor heating system cost?

For areas that need to have more than one heated zone, our MULTIZONE system comes with additional programmable room thermostats and wiring components - on top of everything you get with a UNIZONE system.

The actual cost of an underfloor heating system depends on a number of factors such as pipe spacing and the fixing method.

An estimate would be that it costs £100 per square metre for the first 20 square metres and only £30 - £40 per square metre for every additional square metre (up to approximately 200 square metres.)*

*The cut off point is just over 200 square metres because the largest manifold can serve that area. Any space larger than that would require more than one system.

These prices per square metre are for both the underfloor heating system materials and the labour of a skilled engineer to fit them. They don't include for construction materials such as the insulation and screed which need to be costed separately.

Please note that heating a space less than 20 square metres could increase the cost per square metre considerably. We don't recommend heating very small spaces with water underfloor heating.

If you have a space less than 10 square metres to heat, such as a bathroom or en suite, then an electric underfloor heating system could be a better option for you.

An electric underfloor heating kit with a thermostat can be bought from your local tile, flooring or bathroom store and be fitted by your local electrician or tiler.

For that reason, we don't supply or install or offer advice on electric underfloor heating.

How much does underfloor heating cost to install?

The prices mentioned above include labour as we will supply and install your system ourselves.

If we are installing an underfloor heating system into a new build it is relatively cheap to install.

Retrofitting underfloor heating usually requires that you have to lift floorboards or dig up floors. Once the preparation is done, however, the installation of the system is fairly straightforward and cost effective, although best left to the experts.

We include the cost of installation in our quotes as we supply AND install underfloor heating systems. Labour charges may vary depending on how far our engineers need to travel to site.

As an example, a three storey family home may take 4 - 5 days, or a conservatory a day or two.

You will need an electrician to first fix the thermostat cables and back boxes as well as connect the system to the power supply and boiler switching cables - at a cost of around £150-£300 per day. We can advise them (free of charge) if necessary to ensure that they understand how your system will be installed.

How much does underfloor heating cost to run?

If you are using a gas boiler then the system should cost roughly the same to run as a radiator system.

The system will be on for longer but at lower temperatures. It will also provide much more even heat distribution than radiators can.

An oil boiler will cost more to run than a gas boiler. Gas can be modulated more easily and more importantly doesn't need to be delivered by road.

LPG can be a slightly cheaper alternative to oil if you don't have a natural gas supply.

Ground Source Heat Pumps can cost up to four times less to run than a gas boiler and air source heat pumps half as much to run than a gas boiler.

Heat Pumps do cost considerably more to buy and install though so the pros and cons of each option need to be weighed up.

What other costs are involved?

To fit an underfloor heating system you will need to also buy a boiler or heat pump, insulation, screed, floor finishes and the labour of tradesmen to fit them. The costs of these vary around the country so you will need to get quotes for these yourself.
